Buenos Aires, Dec 2 (NA) – A 22-year-old man was detained on Tuesday in the Buenos Aires town of Ensenada after he attacked his mother, attempted to stab her with knives, set a mattress on fire, and then confronted police during his escape.

According to information from the Argentine News Agency, the case was handled by officers from the Departmental Motorized Group following a 911 alert. The alert stated that a man had gone to his mother's home and, in a fit of rage, had assaulted her with a wooden strap over a meter and a half long, causing injuries.

According to the testimony of the 42-year-old victim, the assailant, Gustavo Guillermo Maldonado, then took two knives, about 30 centimeters long, from inside the house and tried to injure her again. He also set a mattress on fire.

When the officers arrived, Maldonado fled from the back of the house, jumped a ditch, and ran towards an open field. Police launched a dragnet operation and he was finally located at 127 and 38 bis, where he attempted to evade the officers.

During the chase, he threatened the officers with a knife, which he then threw while falling into another ditch, where he was finally arrested.

Three bladed weapons and the strap used in the assault were seized. The suspect was taken to the 3rd Police Station of Ensenada, along with the seized items.

The case has been filed as attempted homicide, qualified injuries, damages, and qualified threats to police personnel, with the intervention of the UFI No. 5 of the La Plata Judicial Department, under the charge of Juan Menucci.
