Emergency due to wildfires in Corrientes

The province of Corrientes is in emergency due to wildfires that have devastated more than 90 thousand hectares so far this year. Multiple operations have been deployed to contain the flames in localities such as Alvear, Santo Tomé, Mariano I. Loza, Riachuelo, San Luis del Palomar, Curuzú Cuatiá, and Perugorría. Teams from the Provincial Directorate of Roads are working on creating firebreaks, while firefighters and ground and air resources combat the fire in critical areas.

Provincial authorities have emphasized an absolute prohibition on lighting fires in the territory and have urged the population to report any presence of smoke or flames to the emergency number 911. Despite efforts, the flames persist in several regions. Sofía Brambilla, a Corrientes legislator, has submitted a bill to the National Congress to declare an economic, social, and fiscal emergency in the province due to the magnitude of the crisis.

In the midst of this context, a suspect has been arrested for starting fires in the fields of Mercedes and Bonpland. In his home, incriminating evidence such as a vehicle, a lighter, and a cellphone were found. On the other hand, the expected rains are anticipated to alleviate the situation, although high temperatures and gusts of wind may complicate containment efforts.

The National Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert for storms that could bring electrical activity and hail, increasing the risk of new fire outbreaks. Although seven fires have been extinguished, authorities remain on alert and are working together to assist affected communities and coordinate the reconstruction of damaged areas. Measures such as the suspension of tax and social security executions, as well as special payment plans, are being considered to provide support to those affected by the fire crisis in Corrientes.
