Tiziano Gravier Mazza closed his participation in the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina with a historic performance for Argentine sports, with a review full of self-criticism and future projection. The alpine skier finished in 28th place in the Super-G, the best result achieved by a national representative in this discipline within the Olympic program, according to the Argentine News Agency. With a time of 1:29.06, the Argentine surpassed the mark set by Nicolás Arsel, who had finished 30th at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, a record that had until now been the best national performance in the specialty. Thus, Gravier Mazza's performance at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo sets a new precedent for Argentine alpine skiing. In addition to the Super-G, the 23-year-old athlete decided to compete in slalom, a discipline that is not part of his main specialties, as for the last two years he has been specializing in giant and super giant. The competition, held in Bormio, presented complex conditions. "I have nothing to regret and I am generally happy with this incredible week," he assured.
"We had somewhat sidelined slalom, but we saw the tremendous opportunity to compete in another discipline to represent the country and we said, 'let's go for it anyway.'" Valeria Mazza's son highlighted the support received and thanked his family and Argentines: "This is just the beginning."
A mistake in the middle section of the course left him out of the race on a day with numerous disqualifications. "Today was a slightly more complicated day. We knew when we came that my strongest disciplines are giant and super giant. There is no margin for error in slalom," he explained in an interview with ESPN. Gravier also noted that visibility and changes in the snow increased the difficulty.
