Cristina Kirchner's Pension Revoked Amid Fraud Conviction

The Argentine government has revoked the privileged pension of former president Cristina Kirchner following her conviction for fraud. This decision reflects a broader policy to eliminate pensions for public officials convicted of corruption, promising significant savings.

Cristina Kirchner's Pension Revoked Amid Fraud Conviction

The national government decided to revoke the privileged pension of former president Cristina Kirchner, after she was convicted by the Criminal Cassation Chamber for fraudulent administration in the so-called Vialidad Case. Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesperson, described the decision as a necessary measure, arguing that maintaining pensions for ex-presidents convicted of corruption crimes should not be a privilege in Argentina, especially when it harms millions of citizens from political power.

Furthermore, he stated that the government under President Milei's administration will not allocate resources to individuals convicted of corruption who have tarnished the honor and dignity of Argentinians. The initiative also includes the annulment of the pension of former president Néstor Kirchner. Adorni noted that this measure generates substantial savings for the country, estimated at 21,827,624 pesos.

The government's proposal is to eliminate pension benefits for certain political, judicial, and ecclesiastical officials, integrating them into the Integrated Retirement and Pension System like other workers. According to Law 24,018, pensions for former presidents and vice presidents are non-contributory and are granted as a reward for honor, merit, and good performance in office, but the government believes this should not apply to individuals with convictions for corruption crimes.

In line with these decisions, the government presented a bill in the Chamber of Deputies to eliminate privileged pensions at the end of September, reaffirming its commitment not to finance individuals convicted of corruption and to reduce spending on prebendal benefits to avoid serious economic losses for the nation.
