Opposition Struggles in Argentine Congress Amid Quorum Issues

After failing to achieve quorum in the Chamber of Deputies, the opposition must regroup. The situation highlights challenges in negotiating the 2025 Budget and the influence of the ruling party.

Opposition Struggles in Argentine Congress Amid Quorum Issues

After failing yesterday due to lack of quorum in the session, the opposition blocks in the Chamber of Deputies have yet to request a new meeting to discuss the reform of the Decrees of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) and the decree regarding the debt swap, topics that are pending due to ongoing negotiations for the 2025 Budget.

Yesterday, shortly before the scheduled time for the session, realizing that they would not have the necessary votes for quorum, the blocks of Encuentro Federal, Unión por la Patria, and Democracia para Siempre issued a note announcing the postponement of the session to Thursday, November 21. However, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem, disregarded this decision and ended the session, forcing the opposition blocks to call again.

The setback experienced the previous day in the chamber, as a consequence of the pressures exerted by the Casa Rosada on the governors regarding the Budget, has been a hard blow for the opposition parties, who have personally experienced the difficulties of the situation. In light of this situation, they are evaluating the next steps to follow and analyzing the strategies to adopt.

In a scenario where the Casa Rosada could offer some minimal concessions in the negotiations for the 2025 Budget, the defenses of the deputies who respond to the provincial governors could weaken, which would neutralize the session scheduled for Thursday. Faced with the possibility of suffering another defeat, the opposition blocks face the need to reorganize and ensure solid support for their legislative proposals.

The support shown by the PRO, which has aligned itself with the ruling party in this situation, has proven to be solid and stable, suggesting a complicated outlook for the opposition front in Congress. The government's ability to handle situations of legislative rebellion contrasts with the fragility of the alliances formed by the opposition blocks, raising questions about their capacity to endure over time.

In this context, the decisions of the different legislative blocks acquire crucial relevance, as was the case with the PRO when they increased their price in relation to the ruling party. The political strategies, alliances, and positions of each sector reveal themselves as fundamental pieces on the current political chessboard, where loyalty and coherence can make the difference in decision-making and achieving the set objectives.
