Vice President and Senate leader, Victoria Villarruel, received her Chilean counterpart, José García Ruminot, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Argentina and Chile in the Blue Room of the National Congress. In her speech, Villarruel highlighted that the meeting with García Ruminot served as a reminder of the challenges overcome by both nations and the willingness to move towards a shared future. She emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries. "A single magnificent mountain range unites us," expressed García Ruminot, praising the work of Cardinal Antonio Samoré and Pope John Paul II in resolving the conflict.

The conflict over the Beagle Channel was a dispute over the sovereignty of the Picton, Nueva, and Lennox islands, as well as the corresponding maritime areas, fought throughout the 20th century between Argentina and Chile. The dispute ended with the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in the Vatican in 1984. In this regard, the vice president highlighted the importance of continuing to collaborate to face future challenges. "As brother nations, this date should motivate us to continue down this path," she stated.

García Ruminot noted that the ceremony allowed for a reflection on that historic moment, valuing bilateral relations and celebrating the capacity of both peoples to move away from past conflicts. He emphasized that Argentina and Chile are destined to maintain a fraternal brotherhood.
