The State Department and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) have approved the sale of armaments for the Argentine Air Force's F-16 fighters. This authorization only needs to be ratified in the U.S. Capitol. The official statement issued by the DSCA indicates that the Government of Argentina has requested the purchase of equipment and support for the F-16s, including logistics and support elements at an estimated cost of $941 million.
Among the provided equipment are AN/ARC-238 tactical radios, protection systems for the F-16s, inert fuzes, and communication systems. Argentina plans to invest around $600 million in this acquisition. The certification delivered to the U.S. Congress notifies about this potential sale, which includes missiles, laser-guided bombs, and communication equipment.
The armament package also includes air-to-air missiles and various types of bombs, among other items. The purchase of 24 F-16 fighters from Denmark will allow Argentina to increase its interoperability with other nations and allies, as well as strengthen its ability to face current and future threats. Lockheed Martin is noted as the primary supplier for this sale, which does not include offsets.
According to the DSCA, the proposed sale will enhance Argentina's military capabilities and contribute to its national security, as well as to stability and economic progress in South America. This acquisition will also provide logistical support, training, and necessary spare parts for the operation of the F-16s in air defense and air support operations.
