Judgment in Femicide Case of Ferni Ayala Expected Soon

The trial against the lender Esteban Rojas Almada, accused of the femicide of his partner Ferni Ayala in February 2023, could conclude this Wednesday with the announcement of the sentence, although there is a possibility that the decision may be delayed, as a day with more statements and arguments from the parties is expected.

The oral debate against the accused began on Wednesday, October 23, after he had been a fugitive for five months until he was arrested by Interpol in Paraguay. After a week of testimonies, it is expected that the penalty imposed by the Criminal Oral Court No. 17 will be announced. Although it is not defined, on this day the accused may make a statement before the start of the arguments, a fact that will be determined in the hearing, which is anticipated to be extensive.

Esteban Rojas Almada was charged with the crime of "homicide aggravated by the relationship and with gender-based violence" against Ferni Ayala, his partner, and for "illegal possession of a war weapon." If found guilty, he would receive a life sentence.

Ferni Ayala was murdered on the night of February 19, 2023, during a night out dancing with her partner and friends. After an argument, they returned to the home in the Zavaleta neighborhood, where Almada assaulted her, attempted to suffocate her, and when unsuccessful, shot her twice with a 9mm pistol. Almada was a fugitive from justice for five months until he was captured in Paraguay.

In the midst of the trial, the victim's family reports receiving constant threats and harassment.
