Disability and Transport: Claiming Rights

The CNRT presents a judicial action to ensure free travel for people with disabilities on long and medium transport services. More than 350 penalties have already been imposed on the infringing companies.

Disability and Transport: Claiming Rights

The National Commission for Transport Regulation (CNRT) filed a lawsuit to ensure that transport companies meet their responsibilities, allowing people with disabilities to travel for free on medium and long-distance transport.

According to information provided by the Transport Secretary in a statement, this action adds to the more than 350 sanctions and 1,000 warnings that have already been issued to transport companies. The judicial initiative, driven by the instruction of the Transport Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, seeks a court order for the National Intercity Transport Business Chamber (CELADI) to review its non-compliance with the comprehensive protection system for people with disabilities.

The right of people with disabilities to travel for free on medium and long-distance transport remains valid and has not been altered by the deregulation of motor transport. In this regard, the National Government assures that it will continue to protect this right and will verify the compliance of the obligation that companies have to provide these services.
