Internal Crisis in Argentine Peronism Threatens Senate Split

A group of Peronist senators aligned with governors is considering breaking away from the bloc led by José Mayans. This could lead to a formal fracture of the kirchnerist inter-bloc amidst the power struggle in the Senate and ahead of the February 24th session to elect new leadership.

Internal Crisis in Argentine Peronism Threatens Senate Split

The tension within Peronism in the Senate has entered a decisive phase and could lead to a formal fracture of the kirchnerist inter-bloc in the coming days. The situation escalated with a political-party episode that acted as a catalyst: the intervention of the Justicialist Party of Jujuy, led by Aníbal Fernández and Gustavo Menéndez, imposed internal sanctions that included the suspension of Senator Carolina Moisés. The group of lawmakers grouped in 'Convicción Federal', aligned with governors Raúl Jalil (Catamarca), Osvaldo Jaldo (Tucumán), and Gustavo Sáenz (Salta), will meet next week to define whether to break away from the bloc currently led by the formoseño José Mayans, the kirchnerist Senator Juliana Di Tullio, and the camporista Anabel Fernández Sagasti. This move is seen as a political statement of autonomy and an attempt to regain institutional centrality. For this group, being absent from commissions meant ceding real power: less information, less negotiating capacity, and the loss of institutional positions that are costly to recover later. On the other hand, the ruling group seeks to take advantage of the 'legislative summer' to advance an intense agenda in extraordinary sessions—focusing on lowering the age of criminal liability and the glacier law—and needs a divided Peronism to negotiate votes or, at least, neutralize a compact resistance. In the background, as a backdrop to the political climate facing Peronism, the Justice ratified a decision of high symbolic impact: former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner must maintain the electronic ankle bracelet and the restrictions associated with her house arrest. The preparatory session on February 24th serves as a clock counting down to the decision. If a division materializes, the legislative map would change: the peronist inter-bloc could be reconfigured with 23 senators distributed between the Justicialist bloc, the Civic Front of Santiago del Estero, aligned with Gerardo Zamora, in addition to the federal bloc.
