Argentina Declares Fire Emergency in Patagonian Provinces

The Argentine Government announced on Thursday that it will sign a Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) to declare a Fire Emergency in the provinces of Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquén, and La Pampa. This was reported by the Chief of Cabinet, Manuel Adorni, on his social media. The decision came after a political meeting at the Casa Rosada, responding to a request from Patagonian governors. The southern governors had asked Congress to urgently pass the Fire Emergency Law during extraordinary sessions, warning that the scale of the wildfires and the impact of the climate crisis in Patagonia require additional resources and tools for both firefighting and assisting affected communities. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Security has allocated $129.244 million to strengthen the National Volunteer Firefighters System, focusing on equipment, operation, training, and supervision. "The measure is adopted in the context of major disasters recorded in various provinces over the past year and those forecast for the present, which require reinforcing the operational capacity of the entities that make up the civil protection system," the ministry, led by Alejandra Monteoliva, reported.
