Argentina Creates Border Police to Strengthen Migration Control

Argentina's government, led by President Javier Milei, is launching the creation of the National Migration Agency and a Border Police force. This measure, approved by the president, aims to strengthen border controls and regulate immigration. The new structure will be formed by reallocating security resources and will focus on combating organized crime, following the US model.

Argentina is creating a new body for migration control. The libertarian coalition government, led by President Javier Milei, is strengthening border controls and regulating the movement of people. For this purpose, a new National Migration Agency has been established and a Border Police force is being formed. The initiative, which has received presidential approval, aims to enhance border control and regulate immigration. The new structure will be composed of personnel from other security forces who will undergo specialized training to reinforce controls. The Ministry of Security, led by Alejandra Monteoliva, is working on a broad reform aimed at intensifying control and patrolling on the borders. The creation of the Border Police is a key element of this reform, which also includes the establishment of a Federal Department of Investigations (DFI) within the police force. According to sources, the new police force will not be large in number, as it will involve a reallocation of human and operational resources. The goal is to transform the federal police into a force focused on dismantling criminal organizations, rather than patrolling streets, which is the role of local police. The authorities cite the example of the United States Border Patrol as a model to follow. Although the creation of the Border Police does not require significant financial outlay, as it will be achieved by reallocating existing resources, the budget for 2026 remains an unresolved issue.
