Argentina's Supreme Court Rejects Prosecutor's Appeal in Gender Violence Case

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation rejected a petition filed by the defense of federal prosecutor Francisco Snopek, who is accused of assaulting his wife and trapping police officers in his home during an incident that occurred in 2022 in Salta province, in a context of gender violence. With the signatures of justices Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz, and Ricardo Lorenzetti, the highest court dismissed the petition for “lack of autonomous grounds” and for not refuting the arguments of the appealed sentence. The defense sought to recuse Judge Federico Armiñana, but the Salta Court of Appeal's Chamber IV had already rejected the request. Snopek is being investigated for the crimes of aggravated minor injuries due to the relationship and gender violence, damages, unlawful deprivation of liberty aggravated, and resistance to authority, all in ideal concurrence. According to the complaint, the events occurred between May 22 and 23, 2022, when the prosecutor, while intoxicated, allegedly attacked his wife—who was caring for their four-month-old child—causing injuries to her arm and head. After a call to 911, a patrol car arrived at the residence, and officers stated that Snopek insulted them with discriminatory expressions, detained them at the scene, and even pushed a female police officer. Last year, interim Attorney General Eduardo Casal promoted political impeachment proceedings before the Court of Judgment of the Public Prosecutor's Office to determine if the official should be removed for “failure to observe good conduct or subsequent incompetence.” Snopek, who was on psychiatric leave for three years, attempted to reintegrate in July last year, but Salta's Attorney General, Carlos Amad, prohibited him from entering the building. He currently performs remote tasks at the Jujuy Fiscal Unit.
