Argentina Pursues US Visa Waiver Program Following Milei's Election Victory

The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, has officially started the process to join the US Visa Waiver Program. This initiative, expedited by the recent electoral win, seeks to permit Argentine citizens to travel to the US for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without requiring a visa. The effort is strengthened by the robust relationship between Milei and US President Donald Trump and necessitates Argentina meeting stringent international security requirements, including full implementation of electronic and biometric passport systems.

Argentina Pursues US Visa Waiver Program Following Milei's Election Victory

The government of Argentine President Javier Milei officially announced the initiation of formal procedures to join the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP). The process began on July 28, during a meeting in Buenos Aires with U.S. National Security Secretary Kristi Noem. According to the Office of the President, this step is part of a rigorous evaluation requiring Argentina to meet international standards in security and migration systems, including the adoption of electronic and biometric passports.

The initiative aligns with Argentina's historical efforts to simplify travel for its citizens, who currently need a B1/B2 visa to visit the U.S. for tourism or business. Under the VWP, eligible travelers would use an electronic system (ESTA) instead of a visa, allowing stays of up to 90 days.

"The excellent link between President Javier Milei and Donald Trump is fundamental to strengthen this initiative," highlighted officials, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic relations in advancing the application.

Following the decisive victory of Milei's political coalition, La Libertad Avanza, in legislative elections, the government gained renewed momentum to accelerate the process. Key U.S. figures, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, are seen as crucial allies in securing approval. The Casa Rosada views this as a strategic opportunity to deepen bilateral ties and modernize Argentina's travel protocols.

The move reflects broader efforts to align national policies with global standards, ensuring compliance with requirements such as enhanced border controls and data-sharing mechanisms. Success in the VWP application could significantly boost tourism and economic exchanges between the two nations.
