The Justicialist Party (PJ) announced today its rejection "in all its terms" of Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) 179/25, promoted by the government of Javier Milei, which allows the Executive Branch to negotiate a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) without disclosing key information. The PJ considers that this DNU evades Law 27.612, which requires the Executive to inform Congress about all details of any agreement with the IMF.
In a statement issued today, the Justicialist Party indicated that the Government's objective would be to unilaterally advance in an agreement with the IMF without revealing the full terms of it. In addition, the Unión por la Patria bloc requested the President of the Chamber of Deputies to convene a special session to discuss proposals related to retirees and pensioners.
The PJ warned that legislators who support this decree would grant extraordinary powers to Milei, which would go against Article 29 of the Constitution. They also questioned that the DNU violates Article 75, Clause 7 of the National Constitution, which establishes that it is the Congress's competence to regulate the payment of debt.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner urgently called for a meeting of the Federal National Council of the party to define a stance regarding the DNU, while the session in the Chamber of Deputies is scheduled to discuss the decree without having fundamental details of the agreement.
The party emphasized that voting in favor of DNU 179/25 would represent a serious institutional setback and highlighted the importance of having transparency in this process. The session in Deputies will take place after officials such as the Vice President of the Central Bank and the Secretary of Economic Policy present in the bicameral Legislative Procedure commission.
