Upcoming General Strike Announced by CGT

The CGT plans to hold a general strike on April 8, with discussions on whether to include a mobilization. The announcement follows recent protests, underlining rising tensions within labor circles.

Upcoming General Strike Announced by CGT

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) will carry out a announced general strike on April 8 and will meet this week to define the details of this action. Some leaders want the strike to be accompanied by a mobilization.

The more combative wing of the labor center has proposed that union leaders declare a new national strike at the next meeting of the Board of Directors, scheduled for next Thursday. According to union sources, the action is expected to take place on April 8, with the official announcement following the Board meeting.

Héctor Daer, one of the general co-secretaries of the CGT, had hinted at a new general strike before April 10 at the end of last week. In a meeting with the leadership of the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP), the decision to call for this strike was confirmed.

Important leaders of the CGT, such as Hugo Moyano, Andrés Rodríguez, and José Luis Lingeri, enthusiastically supported the call for the general strike. The mood within the CGT intensified after the disturbances at the protest march in front of Congress last week, which ended in police repression.

If carried out, this would be the third general strike of the CGT since Javier Milei took office in January 2024. The previous strikes were in January 2024 and May 2024, both with strong adherence and significant impact on public transport.
