The Peronist interblock of the Senate called a special session for Thursday with the purpose of revoking the appointments of Manuel García-Mansilla and Ariel Lijo to the Supreme Court. Both were appointed by decree without the support of the upper house, which generated a reaction from the senators belonging to this interblock.
José Mayans, Anabel Fernandez Sagasti, Silvia Sapaz, Juliano Di Tullio, and Fernando Salino were the ones who proposed the special session to annul the appointments. The Kirchnerist interblock, led by Mayans, decided to take this measure after obtaining the report on García-Mansilla's credentials in the Commission of Agreements.
Although the Senate already had a report in favor of Lijo's appointment as minister of the Supreme Court, it was decided to reject it since he was appointed by decree. In this context, the Peronism promoted a report in favor of García-Mansilla, but clarified that doing so in "total dissent is a rejection".
The special session next Thursday, where the aim is to reject both appointments with 25 votes, seeks to prevent the ruling party and its allies from obtaining the two-thirds necessary to appoint these judges to the Supreme Court. One uncertainty is the future of García-Mansilla, who has already sworn in as a judge of the Court until the Senate decides on his proposal.
In the Commission of Agreements, chaired by Guadalupe Tagliaferro and with Anabel Fernández Sagasti as vice president, García-Mansilla's credentials were debated. Tagliaferro expressed her conviction that the appointment of Supreme Court judges should pass through the Senate, according to the law and the Constitution.
In response to the appointments by decree, the Kirchnerism, led by Mayans, announced their intention to call a session to reject the credentials proposed by the Government. They believe that Milei's appointments violate the Constitution, so they will seek to halt this practice and reject the appointments to the Supreme Court.
