Today in the Chamber of Deputies, the strongest opposition gathered 104 votes to request the convening of the Political Trial Commission with the aim of investigating and accusing President Javier Milei for his alleged involvement in the $Libra crypto scandal. However, the motion presented by Germán Martínez, head of the Unión por la Patria bloc, was rejected for not reaching the necessary majority with 128 votes against.
The votes in favor of the political trial mainly came from members of Unión por la Patria, the Left Front, Federal Encounter, and a Santa Fe monobloc. On the other hand, the parties of the dialoguing opposition, such as Democracy for Always, the Civic Coalition, the bulk of Federal Encounter, and the UCR opted to request reports or question officials regarding the Libra case, rejecting the option of a political trial as they considered it extreme and destabilizing.
The ultimate goal of a political trial is the removal of the accused official, in this case, the President of the Republic, which could trigger a severe institutional crisis. Due to this circumstance, the dialoguing opposition blocs rejected the initiative for a political trial, despite having previously supported the call to the committees of Constitutional Affairs and Petitions, Powers and Regulations to analyze the requests for reports and interrogations.
On the other hand, parties such as La Libertad Avanza, the PRO, the MID, Por Santa Cruz, Production and Labor, as well as some monoblocs voted against the political trial, showing their opposition to the proposed measure.
