The government of Javier Milei is moving forward with signing a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund. In an unexpected turn, legislators from La Libertad Avanza and Avanza Libertad, led by Javier Milei and José Luis Espert, voted against the agreement along with Máximo Kirchner and the deputies from La Cámpora, who also rejected the understanding with the IMF.
Juntos por el Cambio had 111 out of 116 deputies voting in favor, while from Frente de Todos, out of 117 legislators, 76 supported the agreement, 28 voted against, and 13 abstained. The Interbloque Federal had 8 unanimous votes in favor, and the 4 deputies from the Frente de Izquierda rejected the agreement.
Regarding the Libertarians, Javier Milei, Victoria Villarruel, José Luis Espert, and Carolina Píparo voted against, aligning with La Cámpora. The rejection from the libertarians was based on the premise that the agreement with the IMF was "a bailout for politicians at the expense of citizens."
The most striking aspect of the voting was the unusual alignment between libertarian deputies and the hardline sector of kirchnerism. La Cámpora rejected the agreement due to opposition to the austerity it implied, while the libertarians did so because they considered it a political bailout.
Despite their marked ideological differences, both sectors converged in the same parliamentary stance, highlighting a peculiar political paradox. On March 11, 2022, the Chamber of Deputies approved the agreement with the International Monetary Fund to refinance the debt taken on in 2018 during the government of Mauricio Macri.
