President Javier Milei urged the National Congress to approve the agreement that the National Government will sign with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restructure the debt with that organization. During a one and a half hour speech, Milei also requested the approval of the law to lower the age of criminal responsibility as well as the tightening of penalties in the Penal Code. In addition, he announced his intention to push for reforms, although he did not specify whether these would be carried out this year or after the elected deputies take office in October.
In a key part of his speech, the president asked Congress to support the agreement that will be reached with the IMF, following the example of what was done during the Kirchnerist administration. Milei expressed that the primary objective of the agreement is to restore the asset of the Central Bank, thereby strengthening its capital to combat inflation and bolster the country's economy.
Referring to the problems of drug trafficking and terrorism, Milei mentioned that they pose an evident threat to Argentinians. He announced the preparation of a national security law that will provide the Argentine State, intelligence services, and security forces with the necessary tools to combat those who threaten the lives of citizens.
He emphasized the importance of the arrival of funds from the IMF, which will be used to reduce the debt with the Central Bank and create a more stable and investment-friendly economic environment. Additionally, he advocated for a comprehensive reform of the Penal Code, labeling it as the most relevant in the last hundred years and urgent for the country.
Milei stressed the need to resolve the fiscal deficit and its financing, inherited from previous governments, and expressed confidence in Congress's support for the realization of the proposed agreements. Furthermore, he insisted on the approval of the law to lower the age of criminal responsibility and the tightening of penalties in the Penal Code, measures he considers essential to ensure safety and compliance with the law in the country.
