AmCham and IDEA Oppose Judicial Appointments in Argentina

Two of the main business chambers in Argentina expressed their opposition to the appointment of Supreme Court judges through a decree from the Executive Power. AmCham and IDEA pointed out that this decision by President Javier Milei jeopardizes legal security, affects the quality of institutions, and undermines the predictability necessary for the country's economic growth.

Firstly, AmCham, which brings together large American companies operating in Argentina, stated that while the Government has made significant progress in stabilizing the economy, the appointment of Ariel Lijo and Manuel GarcĂa Mansilla by decree could harm these efforts and negatively impact the predictability required for sustainable progress.

On the other hand, IDEA emphasized that the Executive's decision goes against republican principles, stating that the country needs certainty and legal security to build a future of development and competitiveness. Both chambers insisted on the importance of respecting constitutional procedures for the appointment of Supreme Court judges and called for strengthening institutions as a fundamental requirement to generate trust and attract investments essential for the country's future.

Furthermore, AmCham expressed concern over the appointment of judges in commission and the lack of Senate approval, which could weaken judicial stability and undermine the reliability of their decisions. In this regard, they urged the Senate to fulfill its responsibility and address the relevant nominations. For American companies, legal security is essential for the competitiveness and sustained growth of the country, and weakening it would only delay the much-needed economic and social recovery of Argentina.
