UN Security Council Calls for Peace Between Russia and Ukraine

The United Nations Security Council approved a resolution promoted by the United States that calls for an end to the conflict and the establishment of lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, coinciding with the third anniversary of the escalation of the crisis. According to Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, this resolution is an initial step towards a peaceful solution.

Nebenzia pointed out that the crisis between Russia and Ukraine has complex roots and goes beyond a simple bilateral confrontation, making it essential to prevent external forces from hindering peace efforts. He emphasized that, while the text is not perfect, it is the first constructive document from the Council that seeks a path toward peace rather than fueling the conflict.

The approved resolution does not hold Russia accountable for the Ukrainian crisis and expresses sorrow for the loss of life in the conflict. The U.S. ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, clarified that it is not a definitive peace agreement but a pathway to peace. The call is for an immediate cessation of hostilities, with the goal of achieving lasting peace between both nations.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlo, stressed the importance of achieving a peace in Ukraine that is fair, sustainable, and comprehensive. Previously, the UN General Assembly had rejected a U.S. draft and approved a resolution backed by Ukraine and its European allies that promotes Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as a fair and lasting peace.

In the voting, the resolution received 10 votes in favor, while Denmark, Slovenia, France, Greece, and the United Kingdom abstained. The document reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to international peace and security, as well as the peaceful resolution of conflicts, in line with the UN Charter.
