New Appointment in Argentina's Environment Deputy Secretary

The National Government officially announced this morning the appointment of Fernando Brom as the undersecretary of the Environment, which is part of the Secretariat of Environment, Sports and Tourism, despite the criticisms he launched against the management of fire handling carried out by the administration. Through designation 107/2025 published in the Official Bulletin, Brom's appointment became effective with the signature of President Javier Milei and Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos. This appointment came after Brom acknowledged that the issue of forests and fires had 'zero priority' and that there had not been good work done in the matter.

In an interview following his appointment, Brom mentioned: 'What needs to be done is to try to prevent, mitigate, and above all prevent,' recognizing that there were deficiencies in the actions carried out to date. Despite having criticized the previous government management, Brom managed to survive the criticisms and was officially appointed to his position.

The former vice president of the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI) was called to be part of the team led by Daniel Scioli in the Environment portfolio, after Ana Lamas resigned for personal reasons and burnout. Before assuming his new position, Brom worked in the Chief of Staff's office and was contacted by Guillermo Francos and Lisandro Catalán to join the Ministry.

Despite his initial criticisms, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni tried to defend Brom's comments by stating that he was still not fully informed about the magnitude of the situation, as he had not yet assumed his official role in the Government. 'These are the expressions of someone who has not internalized the function and everything we have done in response to the catastrophe of the fires,' Adorni argued in a press conference. 'He will come into contact with the depth of the issue because he is not yet an official, therefore he lacks the information to draw a conclusive understanding of what is happening,' he added.
