President Javier Milei will enter a new stage of controversies this Monday when a lottery is held in the federal courts of Comodoro Py to designate which court will handle the complaints against him. These accusations hold him responsible for promoting a financial project linked to the cryptocurrency Libra that ended with investors scammed out of millions of dollars. Following the explosion of the case on Friday, more than a hundred criminal complaints were filed against the president, members of his team, and other libertarian collaborators over the weekend.
In a 31-page document accessed by El Cronista, President Milei, his wife Karina Milei, Communication and Media Secretary Manuel Adorni, Mauricio Novelli, Agustin Laje, Francisco Caputo, Julian Peh, and Hayden Davis are mentioned. These eight individuals are accused of fraud, bribery, and other offenses related to alleged criminal activities surrounding Libra.
The complaint states that the project promoted by Milei generated profits of 84.7 million dollars for third parties at the expense of scamming investors. Meanwhile, the President's defense argues that his investment recommendation does not constitute a crime and that he was not acting in his presidential role while doing so. Criminal lawyer Francisco Oneto, who has defended Milei in similar cases, declared that the president's conduct is not criminal.
The Government is preparing its legal strategy to demonstrate the legality of Milei's actions concerning Libra. In the meantime, it is expected that the lottery in Comodoro Py will reveal which court will handle the numerous complaints filed, including one from lawyer Gregorio Dalbón. This legal process is surrounded by significant anticipation and speculation about its political implications.
On the other hand, the formation of a Task Force for Investigation in the Presidency has been announced to investigate operations related to Libra and those involved. Meanwhile, the President's Office has confirmed that the Anti-Corruption Office will be involved to examine possible irregularities in this case.
