A center-left coalition in Argentina has manifested against the libertarian government of Javier Milei for its foray into cryptocurrencies, labeling this action as an unprecedented scandal. Another political bloc expressed its intention to create a commission in Congress to investigate what happened, according to the Times.
The influential American newspaper The New York Times highlighted in its Sunday edition that former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Milei's main political opponent, stated that many people who trusted him lost millions of dollars in total, while some benefited from privileged information. The newspaper also mentioned that the promotion of a cryptocurrency by Milei was just one of the many measures he has taken in parallel with Trump, generating criticism and controversy in Argentine politics.
Regarding the cryptocurrency promoted by Milei, its value experienced a spectacular rise after receiving his backing, only to then quickly plummet. This situation triggered accusations that the Argentine president was encouraging the population to make risky investments, leading to a political storm in the country.
The American media pointed out that Milei also made the decision to withdraw Argentina from the World Health Organization earlier this month, while speculation arises regarding the country's possible exit from the Paris Climate Agreement. Additionally, comparisons were made between Milei and former president Trump, who recently launched a cryptocurrency called $Trump that, much like Milei's, experienced a rise followed by a collapse in its value.
