Indigenous Communities Reject National Land Annexation

The Union of Peoples of the Diaguita Nation in Tucumán expressed its rejection of the National State's intention to integrate indigenous communities' lands into Reserves or National Parks. In a statement issued on January 25, 2025, the indigenous communities belonging to the UPNDT reiterated their opposition to this measure, based on their rights recognized at both national and international levels.

In the document presented, the UPNDT emphasized its stance of non-consent to the integration of indigenous territories into Reserves and/or National Natural Parks, adding that this decision is supported by the negative experience in the Aconquija National Park and the recent actions of the National State in indigenous lands in the south of the country. Leaders of indigenous communities such as Diaguita El Mollar, La Angostura, India Quilmes, Indio Colalao, among others, expressed their rejection of this measure.

Each chief of the various indigenous communities, such as Nora Sequeira, Alejo Azar, Manuel Marcial, Luján Sequeira, Patricio González, Pedro Chávez, and Daniel Sánchez, joined the statement expressing their disagreement with the potential integration of their territories into national reserves. The UPNDT highlights its historical non-consent stance, supported by Convention 169, in defense of the autonomy and preservation of indigenous territories.
