Alert for Asbestos Danger in Buenos Aires Subway

A statement from the Trade Association of Subway and Premetro Workers informed about the situation of several workers affected by exposure to asbestos, a banned and carcinogenic material. Since 2018, when its presence was discovered in the subway and premetro, four employees have died from diseases related to this material, while 107 are affected.

In particular, the statement highlighted the case of Jorge Navarro, a worker from the Constitución Workshop who recently died from lung cancer due to asbestos exposure. The Association declared a state of alert and mobilization, emphasizing that it is essential to raise awareness among users about the serious risk posed by the presence of asbestos in public transportation. The medical audit conducted in 2020 confirmed the link between Navarro's illness and asbestos.

Additionally, concern was raised regarding the underfunding of services, as well as other complaints about unhealthy conditions in public transportation, such as the presence of scabies on Line B. The fight against exposure to asbestos has been a historic demand from the workers, who will continue to fight to eliminate this carcinogenic element from the trains.
