Argentina: Rise in Chikungunya and Other Viral Diseases

Over 430 cases of chikungunya have been registered in Argentina during the 2025-2026 season. Salta is the epicenter of the outbreak. An increase in Influenza A (H3N2) and whooping cough cases is also noted. Intensive monitoring of the situation is underway.

Argentina: Rise in Chikungunya and Other Viral Diseases

As of 2026, the total number of confirmed cases amounts to 32, distributed across PBA (14 cases), Salta (12 cases), Chubut (2 cases), Río Negro (2 cases), Entre Ríos (1 case), and Jujuy (1 case). The Central and Southern regions remain above the outbreak threshold, while the NOA (Northwest) region is in an epidemiological alert zone. In terms of absolute numbers, PBA concentrates the highest number of cases with 38 confirmed so far in the 2025-2026 season. Jujuy has added 37 cases, 23 of which are local transmission, and Tucumán reported 27 cases, with a surge in local transmission in San Miguel de Tucumán, where 20 autochthonous cases were notified. Meanwhile, Buenos Aires province registered 6 new cases of chikungunya in week 12, reaching a total of 22. Catamarca and Santiago del Estero reported 11 cases each, while Tierra del Fuego notified its first confirmed case with a travel history, and Chaco maintains one probable local case registered in previous weeks. Through the National Reference Laboratory of ANLIS Malbrán, the Ministry of Health of the Nation identified the ECSA (East-Central-South-Africa) genotype in all studied samples, the same one that circulated in Argentina during the 2023-2024 outbreak. To date, no deaths from this cause have been registered in the country during the current season, and in Salta, 22 people required short-term hospitalization with a favorable outcome. The circulation of respiratory viruses remains stable. Regarding influenza, while there is a slight increase in notifications compared to last week, cases remain at low levels, expected for this time of year, as do detections of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and SARS-CoV-2 indices. In relation to Influenza A (H3N2), through genomic sequencing of samples from confirmed cases in previous weeks, 24 new cases of the K subclade were confirmed, and the total detected so far rises to 118 confirmed in 20 jurisdictions of the country. Meanwhile, three new cases of Whooping Cough were confirmed, and the total of confirmed cases in 2026 amounts to 255, with an accumulated incidence of 0.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Buenos Aires, April 8 (NA) – At least 85 new cases of chikungunya fever were reported during week 12 of the year, while the total of confirmed and probable cases to date rises to 433. Regarding the origin of transmission, it was confirmed that 357 are autochthonous cases and only 76 have a travel history to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Cuba. This was indicated in a report from the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN), accessed by the Argentine News Agency, which detailed that Salta continues to be the epicenter of the outbreak with 315 cases, and the localities with the most cases are Salvador Mazza (189 cases), Aguas Blancas (34 cases), Embarcación (20 cases), and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán (20 cases). Furthermore, according to information published in the BEN, a notable growth is observed in other jurisdictions in the NOA and Central regions. Although the total number of cases still exceeds figures from previous years, the downward trend registered after the last weeks of 2025 is sustained. The national health portfolio maintains intensified surveillance of the Acute Febrile Undifferentiated Syndrome (SFAI) to identify changes in viral circulation patterns and optimize the response capacity to the current outbreak. It also recommends that health services apply direct and confirmatory methods (such as qRT-PCR and ELISA NS1) on samples taken during the first 6 days of symptoms, in order to provide timely information that allows for the characterization of circulating arboviruses and generate early alerts to guide local control measures. Finally, the BEN confirms that 2 new cases of Hantavirus were notified, one in Orán, Salta province, and another in Las Flores, PBA.
