Argentinian Researchers Study Sorghum as a Natural Diabetes Treatment

A research team from UNNE has discovered that metabolites in tannin-rich sorghum can inhibit enzymes responsible for glucose absorption, opening up prospects for a new natural drug against type 2 diabetes.

Researchers from the National University of the Northeast (UNNE) in Argentina are studying sorghum as a natural agent to lower blood sugar levels. They have found that metabolites in this plant, particularly tannins and polyphenols, are the main agents of its biological activity, making it effective in inhibiting enzymes responsible for glucose absorption. The scientists highlight that sorghum, which has low economic value in the Northeast Argentina (NEA) region, is rich in these beneficial compounds. High-tannin varieties are particularly resistant to pests in this area. The research is currently in the preclinical stage; the next steps involve studies on animals, with the future goal of developing an oral medication based on the active principles of sorghum.
