The Pan American Health Organization issued an epidemiological alert due to outbreaks of measles in Argentina, Canada, the United States, and Mexico. A total of 268 cases of this disease were confirmed, with one death, as of February 21, 2025.
The PAHO highlighted the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage against measles because of the virus circulating in the region. It urged countries to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, immediate response through containment measures, and risk communication to the population.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can have serious complications, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Vaccination is key to preventing its spread and protecting vulnerable communities.
In this regard, PAHO reminded the importance of keeping vaccination schedules updated, including the two doses of the measles vaccine. It also emphasized the need to quickly identify suspected cases, isolate infected patients, and follow up on contacts to prevent the transmission of the virus.
