Increase in Hepatitis A Cases Raises Concern in Argentina

The Ministry of Health of Argentina reports a significant increase in Hepatitis A cases, prompting a call for public health initiatives and vaccination awareness campaigns to prevent further outbreaks.

Increase in Hepatitis A Cases Raises Concern in Argentina

The Ministry of Health of the Nation has alerted about the increase in cases of Hepatitis A, despite the fact that since 2005 the vaccine against this disease has been part of the National Vaccination Schedule, which has contributed to a drastic reduction in the incidence and mortality associated with this pathology. According to Fundación Huésped, Hepatitis A is a viral disease that affects the liver and is mainly transmitted via fecal-oral or sexual routes.

The Hepatitis A vaccine has been included in the National Vaccination Schedule for several years and is administered at 12 months of age in a single dose. Despite being a free and mandatory vaccine in Argentina, the recent increase in detected cases has led to the need to reinforce public policies and awareness campaigns to promote broader access to vaccination.

Unlike other forms of hepatitis, Hepatitis A does not progress to chronic liver disease but can cause disabling symptoms and even lead to a severe acute form, causing acute liver failure and potentially fatal conditions. Organizations such as the World Health Organization emphasize the importance of basic hygiene and sanitation measures to prevent the spread of this disease.

The closure of programs and cuts in the Ministry of Health, including the dissolution of departments dedicated to various pathologies, has generated concern among health workers and the general population. The detection of an increase in Hepatitis A cases, especially in specific groups like those under 20 years old and males aged 20 to 39, highlights the importance of maintaining and strengthening prevention strategies and access to vaccination.

In addition to the vaccine, it is recommended to adopt personal hygiene and prevention practices, such as the use of condoms in sexual relationships, proper washing of food and hands, and consuming safe water. The impact of cuts in the healthcare system is reflected in the rise of Hepatitis A cases and the urgent need for actions to address this situation and avoid complications in the population.
