National Sculptor Day in Argentina

On November 17, 1866, in the town of Trancas, province of Tucumán, Dolores Candelaria Mora Vega, known as Lola Mora, was born. She was a prominent sculptor who became an icon of the arts in Argentina and transcended the borders of the country with her works. She is considered the first Argentine sculptor, and in her honor, the National Congress established by law 25.003/98 that the date of her birth be the National Day of the Sculptor and the Plastic Arts.

Lola Mora took her first artistic steps in painting under the tutelage of master Santiago Falcucci. However, her true passion led her to move to Rome, where she perfected her technique in sculpture under the guidance of Giulio Monteverde, a renowned master who introduced her to monumental art.

Her works stand out for their unique style and her mastery in representing human forms with great skill and realism. Lola Mora challenged the conventions of her time and positioned herself as a pioneer in a field dominated by men. Her public sculptures adorn various spaces in Argentina, and her legacy endures to this day, inspiring new generations of artists to follow in her footsteps.

In the words of Lola Mora herself: "The muses have not done anything for me; I was only the instrument of the gods to execute a divine work." With this phrase, her humility and her deep connection to art as an expression of the divine and eternal resonates.
