President Javier Milei met with the representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, in Washington, United States, to discuss Argentina's economic situation over the past year and the measures to be taken in the coming months.
During the meeting, the possibility of a new agreement was discussed, which could involve the disbursement of nearly 11 billion dollars and potentially lead to the elimination of the currency controls. It was considered a key meeting, as Milei's goal is to advance this new negotiation.
The IMF recently announced that a global decrease in inflation is expected, dropping from 6.7% in 2023 to 4.3% in 2025. Furthermore, a faster disinflation is anticipated in advanced economies compared to emerging and developing economies.
At the meeting, the president was accompanied by his sister Karina Milei, who is the Secretary General of the Presidency, as well as the ministers of Economy and Foreign Affairs. After the meeting, Milei briefly commented on his social media that they are working on a new program to support the Argentine economy.
The IMF previously approved the evaluation of Argentina's extraordinary program and is now requesting a plan from Casa Rosada for the elimination of currency controls. In its most recent report, the organization emphasized the importance of dismantling exchange controls and addressing the appreciation of the real exchange rate.
Georgieva described the meeting as excellent and celebrated Argentina's achievements in economic matters, highlighting the reduction of the deficit, inflation, and the positive growth outlook for the future.
