The head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, described the key agreement reached in Washington with President Javier Milei as "excellent." The support provided by the official to Milei represents a significant gesture for Argentina.
After the meeting at the hotel where President Milei is staying, Georgieva expressed solid support for the Argentine program, highlighting the "tremendous progress" made by the country. She emphasized that the meeting with the libertarian leader was positive and announced the dispatch of an IMF mission to Buenos Aires next week to continue working on the new program.
In the meeting, Milei was accompanied by Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Chancellor Gerardo Werthein. The discussions between Milei and Georgieva focused on the agreement between Argentina and the IMF, especially in the context of the beginning of Trump's presidency in the U.S., a country with significant influence in the multilateral fund.
The IMF recently approved the evaluation of Argentina's extraordinary program with a positive assessment of the libertarian government's economic policies. It is now expected that Casa Rosada will present a plan to lift restrictions on the dollar, as requested by the financial body.
Georgieva praised Argentina's progress in reducing inflation, economic stabilization, and reviving growth. She also noted that poverty in the country has started to decline. She announced that next week an IMF team will travel to Argentina to continue working on the new program.
