President Javier Milei met on Sunday with the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, one day before Donald Trump's inauguration. After the meeting, Georgieva highlighted Argentina's economic progress and announced that next week an IMF team will travel to the country to closely monitor the situation. She emphasized advances in reducing inflation and economic growth, assuring that the benefits will soon be visible to the population.
The president was accompanied by the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein during the meeting in Washington. Another topic addressed was the situation regarding the agreement between Argentina and the IMF, especially with Trump's arrival to the presidency of the United States, a country that has influence on the decisions of the organization.
Milei, who is in Washington at Trump's personal invitation, will attend the presidential inauguration this Monday. The IMF recently approved the Ex Post evaluation of the Argentine program and is awaiting a plan from the Casa Rosada to lift the dollar controls. In its report, the organization highlighted the need to eliminate currency controls and allow for the accumulation of foreign exchange reserves.
Before meeting with Georgieva, Milei visited the Milken Institute, where he met with Michael Milken. Karina Milei, Caputo, and Werthein also participated in this visit. The president continues to strengthen ties and seek international support for the Argentine economy in this new regional and global context.
