The province of Río Negro has called for a public hearing to discuss an important project for the installation of a floating liquefied natural gas unit in the San Matías Gulf. The aim is to gather opinions from various actors, both public and private sectors, as well as the community in general, to ensure a transparent and inclusive process.
The project involves the construction of a floating unit to be located 4 to 6 kilometers off the coast, with a capacity to produce 2.4 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Although the opinions will be advisory, they will be taken into account in the final resolution.
The responsible company, Southern Energy S.A., has submitted the Environmental Impact Study, which any interested person can review. According to the preliminary assessment, the project is technically feasible and complies with all environmental regulations as it is not located within any Protected Natural Area.
Onshore, the construction of a pipeline header and a transportation system, both land and submarine, is planned to transport natural gas to the liquefaction unit. This unit, located on the seabed at -35 mLAT, will produce LNG that will then be exported on LNG carriers.
The development of this activity, located south of San Antonio Oeste, is projected to be a significant driver of energy development for the region, allowing for the expansion of the gas and oil industry and the creation of direct and indirect jobs, as well as new infrastructures.
The hearing will take place at the Municipal Gymnasium of San Antonio Este, and all interested individuals, organizations, and entities will be able to participate both in person and digitally. Registrations to speak at the hearing must be made in advance through the website of the Secretariat of Environment and Climate Change. It is an opportunity for citizens to actively engage in the decision-making process regarding a project of this magnitude.
