According to the report from the World Economic Forum presented by the IMF during the annual meeting of the organization, inflation in Argentina is expected to reach 139% in 2024, positioning it as the fourth highest in the world, behind Zimbabwe (407%), Sudan (242%), and South Sudan (216%). This data places the country behind Venezuela (60%) and Sudan (50%) in terms of global inflation projections.
The IMF maintains that most countries have managed to overcome the problem of inflation, including those that are less developed. In this context, Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo has several meetings planned within the framework of the IMF Annual Meeting, among which stands out the meeting with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), an organization that facilitates international business.
There is notable interest from CFR representatives to closely understand Javier Milei's economic plan. However, the main expectation lies in the meeting scheduled with the top brass of the IMF. The International Monetary Fund continues to maintain its projections regarding the evolution of the Argentine economy, anticipating a decline in activity and an increase in inflation during 2024, followed by a reversal in 2025.
According to the IMF's estimates, Argentina's GDP is expected to decline by 3.5% this year, with a projected increase of 5% for 2025 and 2.6% for 2026. As for inflation, it is expected to reach 45% next year, after being at 139% in 2024. While the forecasts regarding the evolution of economic activity align between the Government and private consultancies, inflation projections differ, with the IMF's being higher than the others.
So far, it has not been officially confirmed whether Caputo will have a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva or the IMF's chief economist, Gita Gopinath, during the organization's Annual Meeting.
