Argentina's Vaca Muerta Sets New Fracturing Record

Vaca Muerta's production milestones highlight Argentina's key role in the global unconventional hydrocarbons market. Innovations improve efficiency, but challenges remain for sustainable growth.

Argentina's Vaca Muerta Sets New Fracturing Record

The Neuquén basin of Vaca Muerta has reached a significant milestone in the production of unconventional hydrocarbons. A notable increase in the number of fracturing stages performed has been recorded, which has allowed overcoming previous limitations and establishing a new record for the region. Luciano Fucello, country manager of NCS Multistage, emphasized the importance of continuing to innovate and apply technological solutions to optimize operations and reduce production costs.

This achievement consolidates Vaca Muerta as a fundamental player in the Argentine energy industry and positions the country globally in the unconventional hydrocarbons market. However, despite these positive advances, there are pending challenges that require attention to ensure the sustainability of production in the region. The need for adequate infrastructure, training of specialized personnel, and the implementation of clear and consistent energy policies are key aspects to consider.

During the period from January to September 2024, 13,837 fracturing stages were carried out in Vaca Muerta, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year. This increase is largely attributed to the adoption of the dual frac technique, which has allowed for two fracturing stages to be performed simultaneously, optimizing equipment use and reducing operational times. It is projected that by the end of the year, more than 18,000 fracturing stages will be surpassed, further boosting the basin's potential as one of the leading unconventional hydrocarbon reserves worldwide.

In this context, the importance of collaboration between the government, private companies, and the energy sector is emphasized to establish a regulatory framework that encourages investment and exploration in Vaca Muerta. Joint efforts will be essential to continue promoting the development of the energy industry in the region and consolidating its position in the international market.
