Argentina Tops World in Egg Consumption

Argentina topped the world in per capita egg consumption in 2025, with 398 units per person per year, 35 more than in 2024. Meanwhile, meat consumption (beef, poultry, and pork) reached 118 kilograms per inhabitant, ranking second globally. According to the 'Productive Report 2025' by the Argentine Chamber of Poultry Producers and Industrializers (Capia), last year's egg production increased by 8.82%, reaching a total of 18.97 billion units. This represents an increase of about 1.537 billion units from 2024 and a production rate of 533 eggs per second. The growth was driven by an 8.68% increase in the laying hen population, which rose from 57.7 million in 2024 to 62.7 million this year. 'We can say that the egg remains the most complete, healthy, economical, and versatile animal protein, with no waste and friendly to the consumer's pocket, an ally of health, the environment, and the wallet,' stated Capia. The report also highlighted that the price of a 30-egg pack (about two kilograms) fell by over 60% from May to the present, dropping from nearly ARS 5,600 at the farm level to less than ARS 3,500 currently, despite a 40% inflation in production costs. In the case of beef, per capita consumption was estimated at 48.6 kilograms per inhabitant, a year-on-year increase of 1.6%, although it remains below the average of the last five years. This recovery was accompanied by a positive year-on-year evolution of economic activity and the purchasing power of wages. Overall, 2025 was a year of reactivation for Argentina's meat sector, with significant total consumption and a boom in alternative types. While beef consumption also rebounded to 48.6-49 kg per person, it remains below historical averages. Poultry (chicken) and pork set historical records, with 47 kg and 18.4 kg per inhabitant, respectively.
