Route 11 Modernization: Buenos Aires Province Improves Access to Atlantic Coast

Buenos Aires Province continues to work on a key corridor leading to the Atlantic Coast, one of the most significant infrastructure projects for tourism and the regional economy. These improvements will not only help organize traffic but also ensure smoother and safer travel for over 7,000 vehicles that use this crucial route daily, especially during the high season when traffic volume increases significantly. Work began in 2025 with the opening of a 12-kilometer section between kilometers 411 and 423 in the Villa Gesell district, representing a concrete step in the modernization of this road corridor. The project, led by the Provincial Directorate of Roads, aims to improve traffic flow and road safety for millions of Buenos Aires residents and users from across the country who come to the region for vacations. According to the Argentine News Agency, this involves transforming Route 11 into a highway, an initiative designed to improve road safety, reduce travel times, and organize traffic on one of the most heavily used roads from Buenos Aires and the AMBA to the province's seaside destinations. The project includes the construction of a second carriageway and repaving of the existing road over 72.4 kilometers, between the towns of Villa Gesell and Mar Chiquita. In 2025, a 12-kilometer section was opened within Villa Gesell. The transformation of Route 11 into a highway is set to be a structural change in the way people travel from the city to the sea, combining public works, road safety, and regional development in a single project. These new sections already allow for more organized traffic with separated lanes, reducing the risk of head-on collisions and improving the experience for travelers heading to the region's tourist destinations. In parallel, the bidding process for the section that will connect Mar de Ajó with Pinamar is advancing, a strategic connection to complete the transformation of Route 11 into a modern highway. This sector is one of the most traveled by tourists and residents, so its inclusion in the works plan will have a direct impact on road safety and connectivity across the entire coastal strip. Furthermore, the works not only mean an improvement in infrastructure but also a significant leap forward in accident prevention. The separation of carriageways, renewed signage, and repaving reduce risks, improve visibility, and allow for more predictable traffic flow for motorists, transport, and emergency services. It also strengthens the economic and tourist development of the coastal municipalities, as a safer and faster road encourages travel, facilitates the transport of goods, and improves regional connectivity. Villa Gesell, Mar Chiquita, Mar de Ajó, and Pinamar are some of the districts that will directly benefit from this modernized corridor. With these advances, the Province is consolidating key infrastructure for the present and future of the Atlantic Coast.
