Chinese Demand Boosts Argentine Sorghum Exports

Strong market demand from China is driving sustained growth in Argentine sorghum exports during the current agricultural season. The Asian giant absorbs nearly all of the local shipments, consolidating itself as the key strategic partner for this crop. According to a report by AZ Group, the 2024/2025 season recorded a volume of external sales of 1.5 million tons, of which 90% are destined for China. This export dynamism is explained by the expansion of the meat sector in the Asian country, which requires grains for animal feed, and by the use of sorghum in the traditional brandy industry, as reported by the Argentine News Agency. In this latter point, Argentine grain has a unique worldwide advantage due to its tannin content, a property highly valued by Chinese consumers that gives the local product a differentiated position in the international market. The good performance of external sales has generated a recovery in international prices and has encouraged local producers to bet on a crop that stands out for its hardiness. Unlike corn or soybeans, sorghum requires a lower initial investment and has high resistance to adverse weather events, such as high temperatures and lack of moisture. These productive characteristics, added to the predictability that the Chinese market provides, transform sorghum into a strategic alternative for the national agro-export scheme in the face of current climate challenges.
