Floods in Buenos Aires Province Cause $2 Billion in Damage

The province of Buenos Aires has been affected by floods that have impacted nearly 6 million hectares of land, according to a statement from the Confederation of Rural Associations of Buenos Aires and La Pampa (CARBAP). The economic damage is estimated at $2 billion by 2026. The Confederation has held the three levels of government accountable and demanded the completion of the master plan works for the Salado River by 2030. They emphasized that the country has all the necessary technicians, engineers, and machinery available for these projects. Among the most affected districts are Bolívar, 9 de Julio, and Pehuajó. Satellite imagery shows that approximately 2 million hectares are flooded, and nearly 3.8 million hectares lack the minimum conditions for planting. CARBAP stated that the soy and corn planting window is closing rapidly, with over 1.5 million hectares at a very high risk of remaining unproductive this year. This will not only affect producers but also the entire payment chain that supports the local economy, including contractors, transporters, suppliers, workshops, shops, and local SMEs, as well as state tax revenues. "The capacity exists; what is missing is political will," the Confederation concluded. "The conclusion is simple: we all lose, while the works continue to not appear," they warned.
