New Import Regime for Electric Vehicles in Argentina

The national government has launched a new import regime for electric and hybrid vehicles aimed at fostering competition in the automotive market and facilitating access to vehicles with more advanced technologies. According to Provision 30/2025 of the Undersecretariat of Industrial Policy, a 0% Extrazone Import Duty (DIE) has been established for these vehicles with a FOB value of up to US$ 16,000.

This regime, lasting 5 years, will have an annual quota of 50,000 units for import, divided into two categories of recipients: 25,000 vehicles for terminal companies that produce vehicles in the country and another 25,000 for importers who wish to market electric and hybrid vehicles.

In official words, it is emphasized that the aim is to generate greater competition in the automotive market, which could lead to price reductions and make vehicles with innovative technologies more accessible. The application process for duty-free imports has already been opened by the Government, with an initial quota of 50,000 units for the year 2025.

The Ministry of Industry has announced that companies interested in importing these vehicles will have a period of ten business days to obtain the import permit completely digitally. The allocation of maximum quantities will consider factors such as the committed market entry deadline and the retail price declared by the importers.
