The construction industry in Argentina faced severe job losses, with over 246,000 formal jobs disappearing in the past year due to fiscal adjustment policies and a downturn in public works.


Significant Job Losses in Argentina's Construction Sector

In the last year, construction, manufacturing, and the public sector experienced a significant loss of jobs, according to the Superintendence of Occupational Risks. Fiscal adjustment policies contributed to a decline in registered employment, with a net decrease of 13,216 employers and a loss of 246,163 formal jobs.

Specifically, construction was one of the most affected sectors, with the paralysis of public and private works, as well as public employment. During the analyzed period, the number of employers in construction decreased from 21,644 to 20,316, which meant the disappearance of 1,328 companies and a loss of 71,338 jobs.

Meanwhile, the public sector also showed a significant decline. In Public Administration, Defense, and Social Security, the number of insured workers decreased from 2,616,775 to 2,548,363, which represented 78,412 fewer jobs.

In the manufacturing industry, there was a reduction in the number of companies, from 49,722 to 48,665; and in commerce, although the number of companies reduced slightly from 149,745 to 147,282, there was a slight uptick in the number of workers.

In other sectors, such as agriculture, education, and domestic employment, there was also a decrease in the number of employers and insured workers. For example, in domestic employment, the figure fell from 532,692 to 510,755 during the analyzed period.
