Concern about possible monopoly in telecommunications

The Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, Darío Genuá, expressed his concern over the acquisition of the share package of Telefónica de Argentina by the Clarín Group, warning about the risk of a monopoly consolidation in the telecommunications sector. Genuá pointed out in radio statements that the purchase of Telefónica Móviles by Telecom represents "a monopoly created by the State."

In this context, the official reviewed the benefits that, in his opinion, various governments have granted to Clarín over the last five decades, from the cession of Papel Prensa during the dictatorship to the merger of Cablevisión with Telecom approved during Mauricio Macri's administration, and the recent allocation of the 5G spectrum during Alberto Fernández's term.

Genuá anticipated that the Government will conduct an investigation of the operation through the National Communications Authority (ENACOM) and the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (CNDC), with the aim of verifying whether it complies with the limits established by law. In the secretary's words, "It is the first time a government cares about consumers and ensures the existence of a free market."
