In December 2024, Argentina recorded an energy surplus of 800 million dollars, driven by exports that quintupled imports. Throughout the year, the positive balance in the sector reached 5.6 billion dollars, marking a significant contrast with the deficits recorded in previous periods. Hydrocarbon production, especially in Vaca Muerta, played a crucial role in this transformation.
During January of the same year, Argentina announced an energy trade surplus of 678 million dollars, according to the Energy Secretariat. Oil production in the country reached levels not seen in two decades, allowing for an increase in export supply, thus generating more foreign currency for the country.
Energy exports amounted to US$879 million in January, representing a 23.7% increase compared to the same month of the previous year. On the other hand, imports decreased by 32.5% year-on-year, thus maintaining the surplus trend of the previous year. In this context, the Energy Secretariat highlighted the contribution of the energy sector to the economic development of the country.
