Argentina Engages with IMF for Economic Reforms

The Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation Federico Sturzenegger met in Saudi Arabia with the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva. The meeting took place amid Argentina's negotiations with the IMF for a new program, which according to Georgieva, will require the country to continue with fiscal, exchange rate, and monetary measures, as well as progress with reforms.

In the meeting, Sturzenegger detailed how deregulation and state transformation in Argentina have progressed so far. For its part, sources from the Ministry of Economy assured that the dialogue with the IMF is constant after the visit of a mission to Buenos Aires three weeks ago. In the coming days, Minister of Finance Luis Caputo and the president of the Central Bank, Santiago Bausili, will travel to South Africa to participate in a G20 meeting where they will have the opportunity to dialogue with representatives of the IMF and other countries.

The meeting between Sturzenegger and Georgieva coincided with the celebration of the conference on emerging and developing markets (EMDEs) organized by the Ministry of Finance of Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the IMF. Sturzenegger will participate in a panel on productivity in emerging markets and will discuss the prospects for economic growth and the challenges posed by the current landscape.

In another context, while attention in Argentina is focused on a scandal related to cryptocurrencies, the focus in Saudi Arabia was on the meeting between Sturzenegger and Georgieva. Although the IMF has pointed out the need to deepen fiscal, exchange rate, and monetary measures, as well as advance in structural reforms, official sources indicated that the negotiation of a new agreement was not part of the conversation between Georgieva and Sturzenegger.

Sturzenegger's participation in the committee analyzing the deregulation of the state globally responds to an invitation from Georgieva and is not directly related to the negotiation program, according to sources from the Ministry of Economy.
