Controversy Over Cryptocurrency Ties in Argentina

The relationship between President Javier Milei and businessman Mauricio Novelli raises questions amidst a cryptocurrency scandal involving LIBRA, with claims of illicit gains. Officials deny any wrongdoing as they navigate the controversy surrounding the project.

The commercial relationship between both dates back to 2020. Although in the small circle of the national government they pointed to Novelli as one of the responsible for Milei's approach to crypto entrepreneurs (accusing him of alleged mismanagement), the President had kind comments about him in the interview he gave to TN.

Moments after the interview with Javier Milei ended, the financial entrepreneur Mauricio Novelli, who acted as a link between the President and the company that developed the LIBRA cryptocurrency, broke the silence and sought to distance himself from the alleged mega-fraud that was consolidated last Friday with the collapse of the same, with illicit gains of between 80 and 100 million dollars. In an official statement signed along with his partner from the firm Tech Forum, Manuel Terrones Godoy; the financial advisors stated that they have "nothing to do with the funds raised from the launch of Libra" and that they had no access to any type of privileged information.

The Tech Forum organized an event of the same name last October where Milei met Julian Peh, CEO of the company developing the "Viva La Libertad Project", the initiative allegedly aimed at funding small businesses through transactions with the crypto asset LIBRA. They stated that they met him at a similar event held in Denver.

Regarding the creation of the LIBRA cryptocurrency, they explained that the companies Kelsier Ventures and Kip Protocol sought to "generate a mass of money with the profits from the project to donate to local entrepreneurs who are hindered from accessing credits." In an interview with YouTuber Stephen Findeisen, the latter acknowledged that both Novelli and Terrones Godoy were linked to the launch of the token, although he did not specify the scope of the collaboration.

"Both entrepreneurs have extensive experience in the world of cryptocurrencies, and they decided to hire Tech Forum as a consulting firm to provide them with conceptual developments, commercial and technical advice, based on our extensive experience in the technological world and the crypto ecosystem," they explained.

Novelli and Terrones Godoy acknowledged that they met Peh last year (whom they described as one of the "main references in the crypto world" globally) as well as Hayden Davies, CEO of Kelsier Ventures and one of the main promoters of LIBRA. Javier Milei along with Novelli, Terrones Godoy, and Peh; all protagonists of the LIBRA episode.

"We have nothing to do with the funds raised from the launch of Libra, nor do we have any type of access to them, we know nothing about the money generated by the token beyond the public information provided by the company," they added. Despite the rug pull (the investment scam in the cryptocurrency) that became evident on Friday, Tech Forum said they understand "that this is a very interesting project aimed at financing people and businesses that are hindered from obtaining credit, and need access to funds to grow themselves and help grow the country."
