Economist Javier Milei generated controversy by publicly recommending the digital token $LIBRA, describing it as a project aimed at funding small Argentine businesses. In a message that accompanied the link to the website vivalalibertadproject.com, Milei stated: “Liberal Argentina is growing! They must give explanations.”
Carlos Maslatón, an economist and critic, was even more critical, stating: “There is no hacking.” This episode recalls a similar situation in 2022 when Milei promoted CoinX, a company that was under investigation for alleged fraud.
Amid these accusations, the crypto community reacted in various ways. From La Crypta, they warned: “NO JAVOOOOO! Milei is directly involved in a fraud. Was it a hack?” For her part, trader Lady Market described $LIBRA as a "tremendous scam" and alerted about its risks.
The token $LIBRA, created on the Solana blockchain, experienced an explosive increase in its price, reaching a peak of $4,978 before collapsing to less than $1 in just one hour. Some analysts suspect that this sudden increase could be part of a price manipulation scheme (pump and dump).
Despite the controversy, the $LIBRA project is presented as a private initiative aimed at encouraging the growth of the Argentine economy. Various tools such as Solscan, Jupiter, and Dexscreener are used to investigate assets on the Solana blockchain and verify their legitimacy.
However, Milei's publication has raised multiple open questions, including the fact that two accounts hold 70% of the $LIBRA supply, which some consider a basis for political judgment.
