Approval of Calcatreu Mining Project in Río Negro

The Calcatreu Mining Project, in the Southern Region of Río Negro, is the first metal mining venture in the province to obtain an environmental license for its exploitation phase. The approval from the Secretary of Environment and Climate Change marks a milestone in Río Negro mining, proposing itself as a model of sustainable development with citizen participation and economic growth.

Minera Calcatreu S.A.U. leads this project with an initial investment of USD 25 million and a total projection of USD 250 million in different phases. The creation of more than 300 direct jobs and 400 indirect jobs is anticipated during construction and operation, mainly benefiting the local communities. Additionally, the construction of a processing plant, camps, administrative offices, and waste management areas will take place.

Calcatreu marks a turning point for mining in Río Negro, demonstrating the province's commitment to development that combines economic progress and environmental sustainability. This project consolidates the region as a relevant player in the national mining industry.

The Calcatreu core area covers 30 km² in the departments of 25 de Mayo and Ñorquinco, with estimated mineral resources of 9.84 million tons of gold and silver measured and indicated. Holding a public hearing in August was crucial to ensure the transparency of the process, giving voice to all parties involved.

Joaquín Aberastain Oro, Secretary of Mining, highlights Calcatreu as a pioneering project that can lay the groundwork for future initiatives in exploration. The exploitation will be carried out through an open-pit mining system and heap leaching, with an initial estimated lifespan of five years, and the possibility of being extended for at least another five.

Andrea Confini, Secretary of Energy and Environment, emphasizes that this project not only meets rigorous environmental standards but has also incorporated a wide participatory process to ensure that all voices are heard. In summary, Calcatreu is considered a strategic project that will strengthen the productive matrix of the region.
